Residential Drain Cleaning and Clearing in Spartanburg

Proudly Serving Spartanburg County & Surrounding Areas Since 1982

A slow sink, standing water in the shower, or a toilet that backs up can indicate a clogged drain line. When the problem affects one fixture, the blockage may be nearby. When several drains slow down or back up together, the problem may be farther into the plumbing system.

CB Smith Plumbing has provided drain cleaning in Spartanburg since 1982. Our licensed plumbers locate the blockage, clear the line with the appropriate equipment, and check for signs of a larger problem when needed.

What Causes Clogged Drains?

Different drains collect different types of buildup. Knowing which fixtures are affected helps us determine where the blockage may be and how to clear it.

Common causes include:

  • Kitchen sinks: Grease, food residue, and other buildup can collect along the inside of the drain line.
  • Bathroom sinks and showers: Hair and soap residue are common causes of slow or clogged drains.
  • Toilets: Wipes, paper towels, hygiene products, and excess paper can create blockages.
  • Laundry drains: Lint and other debris can accumulate in the standpipe, trap, or drain line.
  • Main sewer lines: Roots, damaged piping, and accumulated waste can restrict the line serving multiple fixtures.

Kitchen Drains and Garbage Disposals

A garbage disposal breaks food into smaller pieces, but that does not mean everything should go down the drain. Grease can harden farther into the line, while fibrous or starchy foods can contribute to buildup and blockages.

Dishwashers also typically connect to the kitchen drainage system. If water backs up into the sink when the dishwasher drains, the problem may be in the shared drain line rather than the appliance itself.

Problems With Chemical Drain Cleaners

Store-bought drain cleaners may provide temporary relief for some clogs without removing the full blockage. Depending on the product and condition of the plumbing, harsh chemicals can also create problems for certain pipes.

They can make professional drain clearing more hazardous when chemicals remain in standing water. For recurring or stubborn clogs, identifying and clearing the actual blockage is a better approach than repeatedly adding chemical cleaners.

Signs of a Main Drain Line Clog

A slow or clogged drain does not always mean the main line is blocked. When several fixtures develop problems at the same time, however, the blockage may be deeper in the drainage system.

Signs of a possible main drain line clog include:

  • Multiple fixtures draining slowly or backing up at the same time
  • Water backing up through a lower shower or bathtub drain
  • A toilet that gurgles when another fixture drains
  • Water rising in a shower or tub when the washing machine empties
  • Sewage odors coming from drains
  • A clog that returns soon after plunging or clearing the affected fixture

These symptoms can help us determine whether the problem is isolated to one fixture or farther down the drain line.

Sewer Cleanouts and Main Line Access

A sewer cleanout provides access to the main drain line without removing a toilet or opening other plumbing. When one is available, we can use it to help determine where a blockage is located and access the line for clearing or inspection.

A backup can originate in the home’s private sewer line or farther into the public sewer system. If testing or a camera inspection indicates that the problem is outside the private line, the appropriate utility may need to address it.

What to Do During a Drain Backup

If wastewater is backing up into your home, limiting additional water use can help prevent more from entering the affected drain.

  • Stop using faucets, toilets, the washing machine, and dishwasher.
  • Avoid adding chemical drain cleaners.
  • Keep children and pets away from wastewater.
  • Avoid contact with sewage and contaminated surfaces.

For urgent backups, our emergency plumbing services can help. If several drains are backing up at once, stop using water and contact us so we can locate and clear the blockage.

How We Clear Clogged Drain Lines

The right drain clearing method depends on where the blockage is, what is causing it, and the condition of the pipe. Some clogs can be cleared mechanically, while heavier buildup or recurring problems may require hydro jetting or a camera inspection.

We start by determining which drains are affected and identifying the best access point. After clearing the line, we run water through the affected fixtures to confirm proper drainage. If we find signs of a larger problem, we explain what we found before recommending additional work.

Mechanical Drain Clearing

A drain auger, commonly called a snake, uses a rotating cable to break through or remove a blockage. Mechanical clearing works well for many clogs involving hair, debris, and buildup in fixture or branch drain lines.

Hydro Jetting

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to remove grease, soap residue, and other buildup from the inside of a drain line. Unlike a drain snake that primarily clears the obstruction, jetting can clean buildup from the pipe walls as well.

Hydro jetting is not appropriate for every drain line. We consider the condition of the piping before using it, particularly when there are signs of deterioration or damage.

Drain Camera Inspection

Recurring clogs or signs of pipe damage may call for a camera inspection. A small waterproof camera allows us to see inside the drain line and identify problems such as roots, cracks, separated joints, or sagging sections.

The inspection can help determine whether the line simply needs clearing or whether a damaged section requires repair. Our guide to drain camera inspections explains when this type of inspection can be useful.

Why Drain Line Backups Keep Coming Back

A drain that repeatedly clogs may have more than ordinary buildup inside the line. Clearing the immediate blockage can restore flow, but recurring problems may indicate damage or another condition that needs attention.

Common Causes of Recurring Drain Clogs

Several problems can cause the same drain or sewer line to back up repeatedly:

  • Tree roots can enter through cracks or openings in underground piping.
  • Bellied or sagging sections can hold water and debris instead of allowing them to flow freely.
  • Offset or separated joints can catch waste as it moves through the line.
  • Corroded or deteriorating pipes can develop rough interior surfaces that collect debris.
  • Damaged older piping can crack, deform, or shift over time.

A camera inspection can help distinguish recurring buildup from a damaged drain or sewer line. When the piping itself needs repair, our water and sewer line services can address the affected section.

Laundry Drain Overflows

Washing machines discharge a large amount of water over a short period. If the laundry drain is partially restricted, the standpipe may overflow when the washer empties even when nearby fixtures appear to drain normally.

Lint and other buildup can contribute to these restrictions. If a laundry drain repeatedly backs up or overflows, we can clear the line and check for a deeper drainage problem.

Preventive Drain Cleaning

Homes with a history of recurring clogs or buildup may benefit from periodic drain cleaning. Preventive service can remove accumulating material before it restricts the line enough to cause another backup.

The appropriate approach depends on the condition of the drain and what has caused previous problems. We can inspect the line and explain whether preventive cleaning makes sense for your plumbing system.
